This project was initiated by Sheila Unwin. Accompanied by Joan Doern, Elsie Mayo and John Ponsford, Sheila spent hours crawling around the lower, southern, part of the churchyard, sometimes by torchlight, accurately recording the inscription on each gravestone.
Perhaps there is someone who would like to do the same for the northern part?
Monumental inscriptions inside the church have been recorded by NADFAS. We hope that it will be possible to put these online.
The inscription on this gravestone reads:
Aged 67 years
for many years Superintendent of the
Wesleyan Methodist Sunday School
in this Parish
who was accidentally shot dead on
Culverhole Hill on the evening of
Saturday Septr 8th 1883
whilst returning from work in the harvest field
The memory of the just is blessed
Sudden death Sudden glory
This stone was erected by some who knew
him as a tribute of affection and love
